Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast. This procedure involves insertion of implants to increase breast size and to provide fuller breasts. Your consideration of breast implants, for reconstruction or for augmentation, should be based on realistic expectations of the outcome. Individual results vary based on individual factors, such as overall health, chest structure, healing capabilities, and prior breast surgeries.

An incision may be made in any one of the following places: the crease below the breast, around the areola, and under the armpit.

The implants can be placed either under the chest muscle or directly under the breast tissue. Placement considerations include the anatomy of your breasts, volume of breast tissue, size of desired implants, exercise activities (upper body strength and conditioning sports such as weightlifting, tennis, volleyball and others) and interference with mammograms.

There are several implants available at the present time. The implant being used for a majority of breast augmentation operations in the United States is made of a silicone rubber implant filled with a saline solution. Under certain conditions, such as reconstructive surgery, and various anatomical considerations silicone gel implants can be used instead. Silicone gel filled implants are only offered on a limited basis, under an approved adjunct study. Results depend on your individual circumstances.
