Mommy Makeover overview

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to help women restore their appearance and boost their confidence after having children. Pregnancy and childbirth result in dramatic changes to the body, which can feel uncomfortable. Mommy makeover surgery addresses these changes and helps patients feel more like their pre-pregnancy selves.

Mommy makeovers typically include a tummy tuck as well as a breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction. Some patients also opt to add liposuction, vaginal rejuvenation, or other cosmetic surgery procedures. Having multiple surgeries done at once drastically reduces your recovery time. It can also be more cost-effective than having each procedure done separately.

Mommy makeovers are fully customizable. Dr. Troell will work with you to choose the right combination of procedures for your needs, depending on how your body has changed during pregnancy and the unique concerns you would like to address.

Potential Mommy Makeover Procedures

Mommy makeover patients have several different surgical procedures to choose from. Here are some of the most popular choices.

Tummy Tuck

The skin and muscles in your abdomen naturally stretch during pregnancy. While this is a natural, healthy part of the process, it also leaves the abdominal muscles and skin looser than they were prior to childbirth.

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and tightens the tissues in the abdomen. This procedure can also address stretch marks. The result is a flatter stomach with a smooth, toned appearance.

Breast Augmentation

Women will also experience changes to their breast size and shape during pregnancy and as they breastfeed. Patients who lose volume in their breasts during pregnancy typically opt for breast augmentation in their mommy makeover.

Breast augmentations use breast implants to increase volume and give the breasts a fuller appearance. An augmentation can also make your breasts more symmetrical.

Breast Reduction

If your breasts have increased in size during pregnancy, you might opt for a breast reduction rather than a breast augmentation. Breast reductions remove breast tissue, making the breasts smaller and more symmetrical. Breast reductions reduce strain on the back and can make it easier to find clothing that fits well.

Breast Lift

Some patients find that their breasts start to sag after breastfeeding. A breast lift repositions the skin, breast tissue, and nipples to give the chest a lifted, youthful appearance.

Breast lifts do not add or take away breast tissue, but rather reposition the breast tissue you already have. Breast lifts can also be combined with an augmentation or reduction, depending on your preferences.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a fat removal process that is often done on the stomach, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms. Many women struggle to lose the weight they've gained during pregnancy. Liposuction helps patients address these stubborn pockets of fat to get their pre-pregnancy body back.

Am I a Good Candidate For a Mommy Makeover?

The ideal mommy makeover patient has already had children and is not planning on having any future pregnancies. We recommend that you wait six months to a year after you've finished breastfeeding before undergoing a mommy makeover.

Mommy makeover candidates should be in generally good health but have loose skin or stubborn pockets of fat that they want to correct. As with any form of plastic surgery, patients should not smoke.

Additionally, patients should have realistic expectations for their surgery. While mommy makeovers can help patients feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies, they are not a quick fix for more serious mental or physical health issues.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Troell will discuss your goals and expectations with you to make sure this procedure is a good fit and develop a treatment plan. We'll also conduct a health history and screening to ensure that you are physically able to have the procedure.

Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

One of the biggest benefits of a mommy makeover is that you'll get multiple treatments done in one session. This means you'll have a faster, more efficient recovery time with more dramatic results. You also won't have to pick and choose which areas of the body you'd like to target. Instead, you can address all of them at once.

When paired with a healthy diet and exercise, a mommy makeover can help you return to your pre-baby body. Even the best postpartum workout regimen doesn't address things like loose abdominal muscles and changing breast shape. A mommy makeover tackles these issues to boost your confidence.

A mommy makeover can also address physical discomfort in a variety of ways. For example, changing breasts make it difficult to find clothes that fit and can even put excess strain on your back. Changes to your abdominal muscles may also cause discomfort. Mommy makeover procedures address all of these problems in one surgery.

Expectations on the Day of Your Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeovers are done under general anesthesia. This means that you'll be completely asleep during the procedure and won't be aware of your surroundings. Because the surgery is done under anesthesia, you will need to fast ahead of time. We will tell you exactly how long to fast ahead during your initial consultation.

Getting a mommy makeover usually takes three to six hours in total. The exact amount of time will vary depending on the combination of surgeries you opt for. You will be able to return home on the day of the procedure, but you will need a friend or family member to drive you home and help you with basic tasks as you recover.

Due to the anesthesia, you may feel groggy or mildly nauseous for the first few hours after the procedure. This will subside after a few hours of rest. You will also receive prescription pain medication to help keep you comfortable for the first few days after surgery.

Recovery From A Mommy Makeover - What to Expect After

In total, a mommy makeover takes about six months to recover from. Your exact recovery timeline may vary depending on the specific procedures you opt for.

Patients should plan to take two weeks away from their normal routine. During the first few weeks, you'll need to rest as much as possible to allow your body to heal. Swelling, bruising, and pain will be most intense during this time period. You'll need to sleep on your back with supportive pillows to avoid putting extra strain on your body at night.

You'll continue to wear your bandages for the first few days as directed by the plastic surgeon and your team. Depending on the exact procedures you've had, you may also need to wear a surgical bra or abdominal binder.

By the third week of your recovery, you'll be able to drive and run basic errands. You may also be able to return to work if you have a sedentary job. However, you should continue to avoid exercise or other strenuous activity.

Most patients can start exercising again four to six weeks after surgery. However, you must wait until your surgeon clears you to do so. You'll also start to see the final mommy makeover results around the six-week mark.

Mommy makeovers take anywhere from three to six hours, depending on the individual patient.

Patients will experience some pain, particularly during the first few days after surgery. However, you will receive a prescription pain medication to help keep you comfortable.

Patients should wait until after they have finished having children to schedule a mommy makeover. Additionally, we recommend that you wait at least six months after you've finished breastfeeding and wait until your postpartum weight stabilizes.

Most patients can return to work two to three weeks after surgery, provided that your job isn't too physically demanding. You should avoid exercise or travel for at least one month after surgery.

Insurance Coverage for Mommy Makeovers

Health insurance typically does not cover the cost of mommy makeovers. This is because mommy makeovers are elective cosmetic procedures.

However, we do offer financing options for patients through Care Credit and Alphaeon Credit. These financing options help you break up the cost of your surgery into monthly payments. Be sure to ask our staff if you qualify during your initial consultation.
