Blepharoplasty overview

What is blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a form of plastic surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelid. This is done with an incision along the eyelid's natural folds and creases.

This eyelid surgery can be done for cosmetic or structural reasons. When eyelids droop or sag, they can interfere with vision, making it difficult to see. Blepharoplasty also has aesthetic benefits, as it can make the eyes appear larger and more awake. Some patients will pair eyelid surgery with a brow lift surgery or other facial rejuvenation procedures.

Types of Blepharoplasty

There are several different types of eyelid surgery available. Dr. Troell will suggest the best option for you depending on the shape of your eyelids and your unique concerns.

Upper Blepharoplasty

This is an upper eyelid surgery that lifts the top eyelid, removing excess skin and fat. This surgery uses an incision along the eyelid's natural crease.

Lower Blepharoplasty

This is a lower eyelid surgery done to correct drooping and puffiness. It is done with a very small incision along the lower lash line.

Bilateral Eyelid Surgery

Some patients may opt to address both the upper and lower eyelid in one procedure, which is called bilateral eyelid surgery.

Double Eyelid Surgery

This is a form of cosmetic surgery for those who have monolid eyes, which lack a natural eyelid crease. Some patients prefer the look of an eyelid crease and opt for double eyelid surgery to achieve their aesthetic goals.

Blepharoplasty candidacy

Am I a Good Candidate For Blepharoplasty?

Ideal blepharoplasty candidates have eyelids that sag or droop, or have excess fat and skin around the eyes. In some cases, these structural issues may also cause vision problems.

There's no age requirement for blepharoplasty, although patients are usually over the age of 40. Patients should avoid smoking and have no underlying health conditions that could interfere with the procedure.

Patients should also have realistic expectations for the surgery. While blepharoplasty can correct signs of aging around the eyes, it will not drastically change the shape of your face or address larger self-esteem issues.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

There are many reasons to get an eyelid lift. Here are some of the biggest benefits of blepharoplasty.

Brighter Eyes

While blepharoplasty can't actually make your eyes bigger, it will give them the illusion of being brighter and more open.

Less Puffiness

If you struggle with puffy eyelids, particularly on the lower eyelid, blepharoplasty can help. By removing excess skin and fat, blepharoplasty makes the eyes appear less swollen.

Youthful Appearance

This surgery addresses many signs of aging around the eyes, giving the face a more youthful and energetic look.

Better Vision

In some cases, drooping eyelids can limit your vision. Eyelid surgery lifts sagging skin to improve your field of vision.

Confidence Boost

If you're unhappy with the way your eyelids look, blepharoplasty can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your appearance.

Expectations on the Day of Your Blepharoplasty Procedure

Prior to your blepharoplasty, you will have a consultation with Dr. Troell. We will conduct a health screening and discuss your expectations for the procedure. We will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery.

Blepharoplasty is usually done with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. In some cases, we may opt for general anesthesia instead. You'll need to avoid eating or drinking in the hours leading up to your procedure, as it can interfere with the anesthesia.

Blepharoplasty usually takes less than two hours, and you'll be able to go home directly afterward. However, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home, as you will feel drowsy from the anesthesia.

Recovery From Blepharoplasty - What to Expect After

After your blepharoplasty surgery, you will have small stitches where the incisions were made, either on the upper eyelid crease or on the inside of the lower eyelid. These stitches will dissolve on their own after about a week. You will also experience some bruising and swelling around your eyes, as well as some mild pain. Finally, your eyes will be watery and your vision may temporarily be blurry.

These symptoms will be most intense during the first few days after surgery, but will start to subside afterward. We will prescribe eye drops to help keep you comfortable, and you can manage pain with over-the-counter pain medications. Using ice packs for short periods will also help you keep swelling under control.

During the first few days after your surgery, you will need to stay home from work to rest, and you may need a family member or friend to help you with basic tasks. Sleep on your back with your head elevated to avoid putting pressure on your eyes. If you need to go outside, wear dark sunglasses to protect your eyes, which will be particularly sensitive.

You will be able to return to work after about one week. Avoid exercising until you are given permission to do so by Dr. Troell. You'll also need to avoid wearing contact lenses or eye makeup for at least two weeks. The initial healing period lasts for about two weeks, and you'll see the final results of your surgery after a few months.

When compared to other forms of plastic surgery, blepharoplasty is not particularly painful. The pain is manageable with over-the-counter medication

After your surgery, avoid straining your eyes by watching TV, playing video games, or reading. Use prescribed eye drops and ointments according to the instructions to manage dryness.

Blepharoplasty won't completely stop your eyes from aging. Lower eyelid surgery typically lasts a lifetime, while upper eyelid surgery can last anywhere from five years to decades.

Because the incisions are made in your eyelid creases, the scars are very difficult to see after they have healed. Your plastic surgeon will recommend makeup to help you conceal the scars as you heal.

Insurance Coverage for Blepharoplasty

When eyelid surgery is done for cosmetic reasons, it isn't covered by health insurance. This means you will need to pay for your treatment out-of-pocket. However, there are financing options available to make the cost more manageable. When this surgery is done to correct vision issues, it may be partially covered by health insurance.
