Lip Enhancement – Lip Surgery (*)
The two reasons that patients display a larger than optimal aesthetically appearing lip:
- Too large of an augmentation procedure – usually silicone injections
The lip reduction method used on genetically excessive lips is much simpler
This technique can be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation. An incision is placed on the wet aspect of the lip inside the mouth and removing a portion of the length of the lip that is determined to be excessive. The incision is closed with absorbable suture. The recovery is rapid with about two days of discomfort, 5 days of bruising and swelling.
The lip reduction method used from silicone injected lips is much more difficult, because of the severe inflammatory response. There is often asymmetries and an abnormal appearance during smiling, which may not be able to be repaired. Initially the inflamed tissue is removed. This can usually be removed with oral sedation and local anesthesia, occasionally requires either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
After the lip is reduced in size from excision of the inflamed lip soft tissue and the silicone, sometimes reconstruction is necessary.
The reconstruction is either performed at the same time or at a second stagedprocedure. This procedure is to improve lip symmetry or even to enlarge the lip to aesthetically pleasing size and shape.
These methods include:
- skin (dermal) fillers
- fat grafting
- pericranial graft placement
- soft silastic (NOT silicone)
- Perma Lip implants
- lip advancement flaps
