Brow lift overview

What is a Brow Lift

A brow lift is a type of plastic surgery that lifts the skin and tissues in the forehead. This creates more space between your eyes and your forehead, which can make your eyes look brighter and more "awake". This surgery is also sometimes referred to as a forehead lift.

In addition to correcting a drooping brow, a brow lift can also correct other signs of aging in the forehead. For example, many people develop a furrow between their eyebrows as they age. A brow lift will tighten the skin, minimizing the appearance of the brow furrow.

Types of Brow Lift

There are a few different approaches to brow lift surgery. The brow lift procedure for you will depend on the shape of your forehead and eyebrows, as well as the specific concerns you would like to address.

Coronal Brow Lift

This is the oldest type of brow lift, and it is also the most invasive. A coronal brow lift uses one long incision, running from ear to ear across the top of the head along your hairline. With this incision, the surgeon lifts the skin and repositions the brows, removing any excess skin and fat in the process. Because it is so invasive, this type of brow lift is not as common as other options.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

This type of brow lift has become popular because it uses very small incisions. The surgeon uses very precise endoscopic equipment to move the brow skin and tissue. Because this approach is so precise, it results in an easier recovery and lowers the risk of potential complications.

Temporal Brow Lift

This is the least invasive type of brow lift and is best for patients with mild to moderate signs of aging in the brows. A temporal brow lift uses a very small incision hidden in the hairline. It focuses on the outer portions of the brow and forehead. This procedure is often paired with eyelid surgery to create a bright, youthful look.

Brow lift candidacy am I a candidate for a brow lift?

Ideal candidates for a brow lift have noticeable signs of aging in their upper face that they would like to correct. It's normal for the skin on our brows and forehead to droop as we age, which can make you look tired, worried, or even angry. Candidates may also have very deep brow furrows or deep-set horizontal forehead wrinkles. Most brow lift candidates are over the age of 40, although there is no minimum age requirement for this surgery.

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, candidates should be non-smokers and should be in generally good health. You should also have a realistic outlook for the procedure. Prior to surgery, you will have a consultation and health screening to ensure you don't have any underlying conditions that could interfere with the procedure.

Benefits of brow lift

There are many benefits to getting a brow lift, especially if less invasive treatments like Botox haven't provided the results you want. Here are some of the benefits of brow lift surgery.

Removes Sagging Skin

For many people, the skin along the eyebrows and eyelids starts to sag with age. A brow lift removes excess skin and tightens what's left, resulting in a smoother appearance.

Creates A Higher Brow Arch

A brow lift repositions the brow tissue, giving you a higher brow arch. This helps make your eyes look brighter and more awake.

Minimizes Wrinkles and Furrows

If you have deep-set wrinkles or furrows in your forehead, a brow lift will help smooth them and make them less noticeable.

Boosts Confidence

Brow lift surgery may increase your confidence and help you feel happier with your appearance.

Expectations on the Day of Your Brow Lift

Brow lifts can be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation. With general anesthesia, you will be completely asleep. With local anesthesia, you will be numbed in the affected areas, and you will be very drowsy. You will need to avoid eating or drinking prior to the anesthesia. We will give you specific instructions for your procedure at your initial consultation.

Once we administer the anesthesia, Dr. Troell will make the appropriate incisions along your hairline and adjust the skin, tissue, and muscles as planned. The procedure takes one to three hours to complete. Once the surgery is finished, we will close the incisions with sutures.

A brow lift is an outpatient procedure, which means that you will be able to return home the same day. However, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home. You will continue to feel drowsy for several hours after the procedure.

Recovery From a Brow Lift - What to Expect

The recovery process for a brow lift is relatively quick compared to other forms of facial plastic surgery. Most patients will return to work after just one week and will completely recover after one month. Pain is minimal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.

However, you will experience bruising and swelling around your incisions, as well as a tight, pulling sensation. These symptoms will start to subside after the first few days. We will provide specific instructions on how to care for your incisions.

You will need to rest for the first few days and avoid strenuous activities. Sleep on your back with your head elevated to manage swelling and avoid putting pressure on your incisions. You should be able to start exercising again after two to four weeks, but be sure to get permission from Dr. Troell first. You'll see the final results of your brow lift after about six months once your body adjusts.

For the first few weeks after your brow lift, you won't be able to move your eyebrows. However, you will eventually regain your full mobility to make normal facial expressions.

This depends on the unique structure of your face. In some cases, a brow lift can fix hooded eyes, but in others, eyelid surgery may be more effective.

The results of your brow lift will last for 10 to 12 years on average. Taking good care of your skin can help the results last longer.

A brow lift will temporarily interfere with your hairline. However, your hair should grow back within a few weeks.

Insurance Coverage for Brow Lifts

Since brow lifts are a cosmetic procedure, they are not covered by health insurance. This means patients will need to pay for the procedure out-of-pocket. Ask about financing options at your consultation to learn more about your options.
